Wilma Mankiller

I watched the video Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People.   Wilma is one of a handful of Native American recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She lives in the Cherokee Nation. The common factor in Indigenous people is the way they live inseparable from the natural world. This fuels a duty to conserve the natural world that is sacred to Indigenous people which provides them with food, medicine and spiritual sustenance. Some Indigenous people have prophecies that suggest the world will end if human beings forget how to protect the natural world. As seen in Climate Change and long-term survival of the earth. Stories and ceremonies regularly remind Indigenous people their responsibility to the land. It is an Indigenous person’s responsibility.   Non Indigenous have become distant from the land because they don’t have stories or ceremonies to remind them of their connections to the land. Also, those Indigenous people who have achieved the ...

Wilma Mankiller

Today I watch Wilma Mankiller speak before a crowd at Arizona State University. The speech the second part of a presentation by Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture, and Community. Wilma Mankiller was the first female Chief of the Cherokee People and a longtime activist for Indian rights.             Wilma Mankiller spoke about numerous issues facing the indigenous peoples around the world. From the how tribes are being destroyed around the world to the prophecies of the end of time. Mankiller spoke about how systematic killing of tribal leaders and mocking tribal traditions leads to the destruction of tribal nations. I learned that many tribal ceremonies that celebrate Mother Earth, are not just following tradition. These ceremonies keep the indigenous people in touch with nature. That staying in touch with nature, allows one t...

M5 Academic Journal Blog - Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People

Today I have watched the video "Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People" as my reviewed source. It was created by ASU (Arizona State University) Libraries and published on December 10, 2013. I believe they are trying to convey an idea that "the indigenous people have the benefit of being regularly reminded of their responsibilities to the land by the stories and by the ceremonies. They remain close to the land, not only in the way they live, but in their hearts and in the way they view the world. Protecting the environment is not an intellectual exercise; it is a sacred duty" (Mankiller). Mankiller's point of view has established the uniqueness of the Native American as distinct from other people. She also told us how to share a sense of duty to conserve and protect the natural world.        This YouTube video was selected as an academic resource for this course. I think the reason why it was cho...

Module 5: Wilma Mankiller and the Future 21st Century Indigenous People

I reviewed a video of Wilma Mankiller speaking to a group of individuals at the Heard Museum for Arizona State University. The talk, titled “Challenges Facing 21st Century Indigenous People,” explores what it means to be an indigenous person, what makes an indigenous person unique, and how those characteristics will help create a better future for all of us. While YouTube is usually not considered an academic resource, this video was uploaded and sponsored by the University of Arizona. As such, this is a quality and trustworthy academic resource. In particular, I think this resource was selected because it acts as a contemporary primary source—an individual with lived experience who can speak with authority on Native issues. Mankiller was a Cherokee who presided as Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1985 to 1995, and also spent much of her time advocating for recognition of Native people. Her authority, as it relates to her lived experience, is absolute. As non-Natives learn...

M5 Academic Blog (Wilma Mankiller)

The source that I reviewed is Wilma Mankiller: Challenges Facing 21 st Century Indigenous People and was created by Arizona State University. The perspective that I believe it is meant to convey is what the title of the video implies. It is a discussion of the many challenges currently being faced by 21 st century indigenous people. I believe these web resources were selected to makes us aware that many citizens of their respective tribes are still facing issues in the present day. Our class literature elaborated on both the past and present, but only a fraction of contemporary issues was discussed. I found myself researching and becoming aware of present day problems within my selected voice during our scholarly assignment in comparison when we utilized Treuers literature which elaborated on previous historical events. I also believe this resource was selected and not others because it is from a reputable, educational, and credible source. A website that can be deemed credible...
